Nicosia's Venetian walls

Good news: if you are travelling from Spain or another European Union country, the paperwork for Cyprus is among the simplest in the Mediterranean. Even so, there are a few details worth sorting out before leaving home.

This is practical guidance, not official advice. Requirements can change, so always confirm the information with official sources before travelling.

National ID card or passport

Cyprus is a member of the European Union. Spanish citizens can enter with a valid Spanish national ID card (DNI) or passport. No visa is needed for tourist stays.

Check the expiry date before booking, rather than on the eve of your flight. Keep the document with you during the trip: you will need it if you cross to the north.

If you are travelling from outside the EU, requirements depend on your nationality. Check with the relevant Cypriot embassy or consulate in advance.

If you are crossing to the north

Crossing the Green Line is common and straightforward, but has its own details to consider: which document to show, what happens with your hire car and what changes for currency and your phone.

We cover all of that step by step in visiting northern Cyprus. The one thing to know here: your identity document is essential and will be requested in both directions.

Driving licence

A Spanish driving licence is valid in Cyprus. You do not need an international driving permit if your licence is from the EU.

Remember that you drive on the left here, and that hire companies have their own requirements for age and how long you have held your licence. We cover these in hiring a car in Cyprus.

Health and travel insurance

The European Health Insurance Card gives you access to public healthcare on the same terms as residents, but it does not cover everything: repatriation, private care and many unexpected situations are excluded.

Travel insurance with medical cover is one of those things that seems optional until the day it is not. If you go hiking, diving or do any other activity, check that your policy includes it.

Travelling with children

Children need their own national ID card or passport. If a child is travelling with only one parent or with other adults, authorisation may be required: check in advance, because although checks do not always request it, they sometimes do.

And one easily forgotten detail: if the child has another nationality or dual nationality, check which document they should use to enter and leave.

Before closing your suitcase

A valid identity document, a licence if you will be driving, insurance arranged and copies saved. With those, the paperwork is sorted.

For the other things worth knowing before landing, such as currency, language, plugs and customs, continue with what to know before travelling to Cyprus.
