The money question comes before all the others. Is Cyprus expensive? It is neither the cheap destination it once was nor the unaffordable indulgence some fear. You can travel well here without breaking the bank, if you know where the money goes.

These are rough indications based on what we see living here. Prices change with the season and from business to business, so treat them as a guide rather than a bill.

## Flights: where the season makes the biggest difference

From Spain, the flight is usually the biggest expense of the trip. Outside high season, you can find reasonably priced tickets by searching ahead and being flexible with dates; in July and August, the same journey can cost twice as much or more.

You do not have to assume a connection when flying from Spain. Wizz Air launched its direct Madrid-Larnaca route in September 2026, while Barcelona already had direct flights to Larnaca with the same airline.

Cyprus Airways also operates direct flights from Barcelona to Larnaca as part of its summer schedule. These are not limited to July and August: in 2026, the airline lists options through October. Always check available dates before planning your trip around a route.

If you are flying from another airport or the direct flight dates do not work for you, a connection may be a better fit. Compare the total price including baggage and transfers, and choose between [Larnaca](https://byole.com/en/places/larnaca) and [Paphos](https://byole.com/en/places/paphos) with your accommodation in mind: crossing the island also costs time and money.

> olé tip: If your dates are flexible, compare a few weeks before and after your first choice. For Cyprus, moving the trip by a fortnight can affect the airfare more than any other trick.

## Accommodation: the decision that shapes the budget

There is a wide range: simple apartments, beach hotels, village houses. As a general rule, prices on the east coast ([Protaras](https://byole.com/en/places/protaras-paralimni) and the surrounding area) and in the busiest tourist areas rise sharply in summer, while Larnaca and inland villages stay more stable throughout the year.

An apartment with a kitchen brings the overall bill down considerably: having breakfast at home and picking up the occasional meal at a market or bakery leaves your budget for what really matters, which is usually going out for dinner.

Booking ahead matters more in summer and over long holiday weekends. Outside those periods, there is plenty of choice and you do not need to secure every night months in advance.

## Food: good eating for the money

Eating out is one of the loveliest parts of the trip, and you do not need to spend much to eat well. An informal taverna meal is reasonably priced, and bakeries take care of breakfast and lunch for very little.

Meze deserves a section of its own: several dishes to share that can offer good value for two or more people, but are worth understanding before ordering. We explain it fully in [how to order a meze in Cyprus](https://byole.com/en/stories/cypriot-meze).

Tap water is drinkable, coffee is affordable, and seasonal fruit is delicious and cheap. Small everyday expenses are not what sends a budget out of control here.

## Getting around: an expense to plan for

Transport is the most variable part of the budget. Buses between cities are cheap; a hire car adds to the cost each day, but opens up the whole island. It is not just a decision about price: it is a decision about the trip you want.

If you choose a car, [hiring a car in Cyprus](https://byole.com/en/stories/renting-a-car-in-cyprus) explains what to check in the insurance, deposit and small print, which is where the actual price diverges from the advertised one.

## Entry fees and extras: the easy part to control

Archaeological sites and museums have modest entry fees. Beaches are free; you only pay for a sunlounger and parasol if you want them. Boat trips and activities are the most variable extras: choose one or two you are excited about rather than piling them up.

As an overall guide, a couple with reasonably priced flights, a simple apartment, a car for a few days and dinners out can enjoy a very full week without an unpleasant financial surprise on returning home. Cyprus rewards spending on experiences rather than complications.
